Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking in Kano after a meeting with a coalition of traders, Amaechi said there would be “no retreat, no surrender” in his political ambition, insisting that he would not step aside for any aspirant in the party.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Amaechi reaffirmed his resolve to run in the ADC presidential primary, expressing confidence that, by God’s grace, he would win and face President Bola Tinubu in the general election. “I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead,” he stated, adding that internal competition was essential for deepening democracy within the party.

The former minister also delivered a scathing assessment of the Tinubu administration, claiming that Nigerians across regions were disillusioned with government policies and direction. According to him, Tinubu’s leadership has failed to promote inclusivity, with appointments allegedly skewed to favour only a few close associates. “Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the South. He frames it as a North-South contest, but the truth is people are suffering everywhere,” Amaechi said.

When asked about possible zoning arrangements within the ADC, Amaechi said he would abide by the party’s decision but stressed that he remained firmly in the race. He further described himself as one of the most prepared candidates, arguing that his candidacy could unify diverse regions of the country. “If you look at all those aspiring, including Tinubu, tell me honestly, who is better prepared than I am? My candidacy offers unity,” he declared.

Although some analysts have suggested that Amaechi’s political influence has diminished in Rivers State due to the dominance of his long-time rival, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, he dismissed such views. He pointed to what he described as massive grassroots support during his recent visit to Rivers for the inauguration of the ADC, saying the overwhelming turnout showed he still commanded significant political relevance.
