The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has temporarily suspended train operations along the Port Harcourt–Aba corridor, citing the need for essential routine maintenance. The decision was confirmed in a press release signed by the corporation’s Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, who assured passengers that the move was aimed at improving service efficiency and ensuring safety across the route.

According to the statement, the suspension is part of the NRC’s continuous efforts to maintain operational standards and guarantee the durability of its infrastructure. Dr. Opeifa explained that while the disruption may inconvenience regular commuters, the corporation places the safety of passengers and reliability of its services above all other considerations.

He noted that maintenance of rail infrastructure and rolling stock is a crucial component of the NRC’s operations, particularly on busy routes such as Port Harcourt–Aba, which serves thousands of passengers weekly. “Routine checks and maintenance are vital in preserving the quality of service we deliver and in reducing risks associated with train travel,” the MD said.

The corporation has given assurance that the suspension is temporary, with normal train operations expected to resume on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Passengers have been advised to plan their travel schedules accordingly and make alternative arrangements during the period of suspension.

Dr. Opeifa further expressed NRC’s appreciation to commuters for their understanding and cooperation. He reiterated the management’s commitment to providing safer, more efficient, and customer-friendly railway services across the country.

The Port Harcourt–Aba route has become one of the busiest in the NRC’s Eastern District operations, offering affordable and reliable transportation for business, trade, and daily commuting. The temporary shutdown, though inconvenient, is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience when services resume.

The NRC also emphasized that the exercise reflects its broader vision to modernize rail transport in Nigeria and strengthen public confidence in train services as a safe and dependable mode of travel.
