Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has defended his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a strategic step towards building a stronger political base ahead of the 2027 elections. The politician, who emerged as one of the leading challengers in the last Lagos governorship poll, said his new political home offers him the platform to consolidate his vision for good governance and inclusive leadership in the state.

Speaking on his defection, Rhodes-Vivour stressed that the move was not about abandoning his supporters but about aligning with a party that shares his values of transparency, youth empowerment, and grassroots participation. He explained that the ADC provides him with the organizational structure and ideological space needed to galvanize Lagosians around issues of accountability, development, and social justice.

The former Labour Party candidate also reaffirmed his ambition to contest the 2027 Lagos governorship election, noting that his experiences from the last race have strengthened his resolve. According to him, the struggles of ordinary Lagos residents—including challenges in housing, transport, healthcare, and education—remain urgent issues that require a government committed to people-centered policies.

Rhodes-Vivour’s defection has stirred discussions within Lagos political circles, with some analysts suggesting that his move could reshape the opposition landscape ahead of 2027. They argue that the ADC, though not among the state’s dominant parties, could gain renewed visibility with his entry, especially if he succeeds in mobilizing young voters and civil society groups.

He also addressed speculations about his strained relationship with the Labour Party, clarifying that his decision was based on ideological alignment rather than personal grievances. Rhodes-Vivour emphasized that he remains open to working with progressive forces across parties to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and usher in what he called “a new era of leadership” in Lagos.

Supporters of the ADC have welcomed his entry, describing it as a boost to the party’s credibility and electoral prospects. They believe that his popularity, especially among the youth and urban professionals, could significantly enhance the party’s chances in the next election cycle.

As political realignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027, Rhodes-Vivour’s move is expected to inject fresh energy into Lagos politics. Whether the decision translates into electoral success, however, will depend on his ability to build alliances, strengthen grassroots structures, and convince Lagosians that his vision offers a credible alternative to the status quo.
