Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has appealed for peace and unity in the state, urging political actors and stakeholders to put aside their differences and work towards the common good of the people. The governor made the call while addressing a gathering of traditional rulers and community leaders in Port Harcourt, stressing that only a peaceful atmosphere can guarantee meaningful development and progress.
Fubara, who acknowledged the recent political disagreements that have unsettled the state, said that governance can only thrive when there is stability. He emphasized that Rivers people deserve better than endless conflicts, noting that his administration remains committed to prioritizing service delivery over political rivalry.
According to him, political crises have historically slowed down development in Rivers State, and repeating the same pattern would only deprive citizens of the dividends of democracy. He called on leaders at all levels to show restraint, demonstrate maturity, and place the collective interest of the state above personal ambitions.
The governor assured residents that his government is open to dialogue and reconciliation with all stakeholders, regardless of political affiliations. He explained that peace and cooperation among political leaders would pave the way for improved infrastructure, stronger security, and more opportunities for the state’s teeming youth population.
Fubara also appealed to the traditional institution to continue to play a stabilizing role by discouraging violence and fostering unity among their subjects. He noted that traditional rulers remain custodians of peace at the grassroots level and therefore have a duty to guide their communities towards harmony.
While acknowledging the challenges confronting his administration, the governor expressed optimism that with peace and cooperation, Rivers State can continue to thrive as an economic hub in the Niger Delta region. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparent leadership, inclusiveness, and the pursuit of policies that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.
The governor’s call for peace comes at a time of heightened political tension in the state, with various factions engaging in disputes that have attracted national attention. His appeal is seen as a strategic move to calm frayed nerves and restore confidence in the stability of governance in Rivers State.
