Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has expressed optimism that Nigeria still has a realistic chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their shaky start to the qualifying campaign. The ex-Chelsea midfielder, who was part of the squad that represented Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, said the team must remain focused and united to turn their fortunes around in the remaining matches.
Mikel, speaking during a media chat on Tuesday, urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the national team, stressing that a few setbacks should not define their qualification hopes. He noted that football is unpredictable and that determination and tactical discipline could still see the Eagles bounce back strongly. According to him, every point still counts, and with consistent effort, the team could regain their momentum and secure the needed results.
The former midfielder highlighted the importance of leadership on and off the pitch, emphasizing that the players must show greater commitment and belief. “Qualifying for the World Cup is never easy. We’ve been in similar situations before and still made it through. What the team needs now is confidence, hard work, and support from everyone,” Mikel said. He added that the Super Eagles have enough quality to compete with any side in Africa if they stay organized and focused.
Mikel also called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and technical crew to provide a stable environment for the players to perform at their best. He stressed that consistency in selection, proper preparation, and effective game strategies would play a key role in reviving the team’s campaign. The 2013 AFCON winner urged the coaching staff to prioritize teamwork and adaptability, given the competitive nature of the qualification series.
Reacting to the growing criticism of the team’s performance, Mikel appealed to fans to continue supporting the players rather than demoralizing them. He reminded Nigerians that the Super Eagles have a proud football history built on resilience and unity, which should inspire the current squad to rise above their challenges.
With several matches still to be played, Mikel believes the Super Eagles can still rewrite their story. “The dream is not over,” he said confidently. “The players must believe in themselves, correct their mistakes, and fight for the badge. If they do that, I have no doubt Nigeria will be at the 2026 World Cup.”
His comments have reignited hope among fans who are eager to see the team return to the global stage after missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Super Eagles are expected to resume their qualification campaign in the coming months, with crucial fixtures that could determine their fate in the race to North America.
