In a candid interview, actor and activist Michael J. Fox opened up about his long battle with Parkinson’s disease and his thoughts on mortality. Diagnosed at age 29 in 1991, Fox has lived with the neurodegenerative condition for more than three decades, becoming one of its most prominent public advocates.
“There are not many people who have had Parkinson’s for 35 years,” Fox said. “I’d like to just not wake up one day. That’d be really cool. I don’t want it to be dramatic. I don’t want to trip over furniture, smash my head”.
Fox described Parkinson’s as “mysterious and enigmatic,” noting that unlike other illnesses such as cancer, there is no clear progression or timeline. “It’s not like you go through stages. It’s different for everyone,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, Fox has maintained a sense of humor and resilience. He recently released a memoir titled Future Boy, which reflects on his life, career, and experiences with the disease. The book coincides with his guest appearance on the television series Shrinking, where he plays a character living with Parkinson’s.
Fox’s reflections on death come after years of physical hardship. He has suffered multiple fractures and undergone surgeries related to the disease’s impact on his mobility. “Walking is a bit dangerous,” he admitted in a separate interview, adding that he tries to avoid unnecessary movement to prevent injury.
Throughout his journey, Fox has remained committed to Parkinson’s research and advocacy. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, which has since become the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research in the world.
His openness about the disease and its toll has helped raise awareness and reduce stigma. “I’m not afraid of death,” Fox said. “I’ve had a great life. I’ve had a great career. I’ve had a great family. I’m grateful for all of it”.
Fox’s comments have resonated with fans and fellow patients alike, many of whom see him as a symbol of courage and perseverance. As he continues to advocate for better treatments and understanding, his legacy remains deeply intertwined with the fight against Parkinson’s.
