Lagos seals church over noise pollution

LAGOS, Nigeria — Authorities in Lagos have intensified a crackdown on environmental violations, sealing multiple establishments across the city for noise and air pollution, including a church, a food processing facility, and a pharmaceutical company.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) announced Tuesday that it had shut down the Cherubim and Seraphim (King of Kings) Church in Georgius Cole Estate, Ifako-Ijaiye, following repeated complaints from residents about excessive noise. The agency also sealed a fufu production shop for heat and air pollution, and Tyonex Nigeria Limited, located along LASU–Isheri Road in Igando, for creating what officials described as an “environmental nuisance.”

LASEPA General Manager Babatunde Ajayi said the enforcement operation, conducted Monday, was part of efforts to safeguard public health and restore environmental order. He emphasized that while freedom of worship is protected, it must not infringe on the rights and well-being of others.

“No individual or group is permitted to negatively impact the health of neighbors under the guise of religious activities,” Ajayi stated, adding that the church had ignored multiple warnings before the closure.

The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on all forms of pollution.

In a related development, the Lagos State Government also sealed the sewage and wastewater treatment facility at Yaba College of Technology. The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office said the institution had been discharging untreated sewage into the environment despite receiving several warning letters.

Officials say enforcement actions will continue as part of a broader campaign to ensure environmental compliance across the state.
