LOKOJA, Nigeria (AP), Security forces in Kogi State ambushed a group of illegal miners and arrested three suspects during a weekend operation, authorities said.
The troops, acting on intelligence reports, moved into a mining site where unauthorized excavation was taking place. Officials said the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief pursuit.
Illegal mining has become a growing concern in Kogi, where unregulated activities have been linked to environmental damage, loss of government revenue, and rising insecurity. Authorities say criminal groups often exploit mineral-rich areas, fueling clashes and undermining local communities.
The arrested suspects are being held for questioning as investigations continue. Officials vowed to intensify operations against illegal mining, stressing that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to protect natural resources and restore order in the region.
