Peter Obi Meets Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed in Closed-Door Talks

BAUCHI, Nigeria (FN), Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi met Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in a closed-door session at the Government House in Bauchi on Thursday, fueling speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Lounge of the Government House, was attended by Southeast senators Victor Umeh and Enyinnaya Abaribe as well as Igbo elders. While details of the discussions were not made public, political observers say the talks likely centered on Obi’s presidential ambitions and potential alliances across party lines.

Obi, who has recently aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is widely seen as positioning for another run at the presidency. Mohammed, a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has also been linked to possible defections, having hosted leaders from both the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in recent weeks.

The Bauchi meeting underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, where closed-door consultations often precede major shifts. Similar gatherings in the past paved the way for the 2013 opposition merger that created the APC, reshaping the country’s electoral map.

Neither Obi nor Mohammed offered immediate comments after the meeting, but the encounter is expected to intensify speculation about coalition-building as Nigeria’s political class looks ahead to 2027.
