A Nigerian billionaire, Amadi Simon, has been arrested in Switzerland in a global drug raid coordinated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and European security agencies. The operation dismantled a transnational cartel accused of laundering hundreds of billions of naira through shell companies, cryptocurrency wallets, and luxury properties in Nigeria.

Simon was taken into custody on April 28, 2026, in Switzerland. Two alleged co-conspirators, Jecinta Amara Ikechi, 34, and Blessing Ngozi Amadi, 28, were arrested in Anambra and Delta states respectively. Authorities said the suspects face charges of international drug trafficking and money laundering.

Investigators seized several assets linked to the cartel, including Jovi Hotel in Asaba, Jovi Hotel and Suites in Agbor, and Jovi Apartment in Mabushi, Abuja. Multiple bank accounts and cryptocurrency addresses were also frozen.

The arrests followed months of intelligence gathering by agencies in Switzerland, France, and Greece, which linked Simon to laundering drug proceeds across Europe and Nigeria. Officials said the cartel relied on shell companies, crypto wallets, and layered transactions to conceal illicit funds.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.) described the arrest as a major breakthrough against international drug trafficking and financial crimes. He emphasized that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for drug cartels or illicit financial operations and praised intelligence sharing and joint operations with global partners.

Analysts say the case underscores Nigeria’s vulnerability to transnational drug cartels but also highlights growing international cooperation. The freezing of accounts and crypto wallets signals tighter scrutiny on illicit financial flows, while law enforcement experts believe the arrests set a precedent for dismantling high-level drug networks through cross-border collaboration.
