The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course will begin on Wednesday, June 10, with the reception and registration of prospective corps members across Nigeria. Registration will close at midnight on Friday, June 12, in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, followed by the swearing-in ceremony on June 12. The orientation exercise will officially end on Tuesday, June 30.

In its statement, the scheme wished all mobilized graduates safe journeys to their orientation camps and reiterated its warning against night travel. Corps members were advised to suspend their journeys once it is 6 p.m. and spend the night at any available corps lodge, military formation, police station, outpost, or palace of a traditional ruler before continuing the next morning.

The NYSC was established in 1973 by the Nigerian government under General Yakubu Gowon as part of efforts to promote national unity and integration after the civil war. The program mandates all Nigerian graduates under the age of 30 to serve the country for one year in various capacities, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and public administration. During the service year, corps members undergo a three-week orientation in designated camps, where they receive paramilitary training, civic education, and cultural exposure. After orientation, they are posted to different parts of the country, often outside their home states, to foster cross-cultural understanding and national cohesion.

Over the decades, the NYSC has become a rite of passage for Nigerian graduates, playing a crucial role in manpower development and bridging ethnic divides. While the scheme has faced challenges such as security concerns and calls for reform, it remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s youth and national service policy.
