Peter Obi’s demand for damages and a public apology from Kenneth Okonkwo has added a new layer of tension to Nigeria’s political scene ahead of the 2027 elections. In a letter dated June 9, Obi’s legal team accused Okonkwo of making baseless and defamatory claims during a television interview, including allegations of bribery, extortion, and fraudulent candidate selection within the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The lawyers argued that the remarks, widely circulated by media outlets, were not mere political commentary but a direct assault on Obi’s integrity and reputation.

The demands outlined in the letter were sweeping: a withdrawal of the statements, an unreserved apology with equal prominence to the original broadcast, a written undertaking to desist from further defamatory remarks, and payment of five billion naira in damages. Obi’s team warned that failure to comply within seven days would force them to pursue legal remedies, including injunctions, public retractions, and recovery of costs. They also signaled the possibility of seeking even higher damages if the matter escalates.

The allegations attributed to Okonkwo included claims that aspirants were asked to pay ten million naira bribes, that Obi personally compiled candidate lists from a hotel room, and that he collected money from supporters abroad. Obi’s lawyers described these assertions as malicious fabrications designed to portray him as dishonest and criminally complicit. They stressed that such accusations could severely damage his standing as a presidential candidate and undermine public trust in his leadership.

Okonkwo, however, dismissed the demand in a statement posted on his X account, saying he had not yet read the letter. His response suggests little inclination to comply immediately, raising the prospect of a protracted legal battle. The dispute underscores the increasingly contentious atmosphere surrounding Nigeria’s political landscape, where reputational attacks and legal challenges are becoming central to the struggle for influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
