KANO, Nigeria — Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, has challenged the state government to present evidence supporting allegations that he diverted local government funds through his son.
The former deputy governor was reacting to claims reportedly made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who alleged that funds from local councils were funneled to Gwarzo via his son, Mujahid.
In a statement issued Thursday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, Gwarzo described the allegations as “false, baseless, and an attempt to damage his reputation.” He insisted that he has always upheld transparency and accountability in public service. “Mere accusations, no matter how often repeated in the media, do not amount to proof,” the statement said.
The dispute highlights the tense political climate in Kano, where accusations of corruption have frequently surfaced. Kano State has witnessed similar controversies in the past, including allegations against former officials over mismanagement of local government funds. Such claims often become flashpoints in the state’s highly competitive political environment.
Reactions to the latest allegation have been mixed. Supporters of Gwarzo took to social media to defend him, calling the accusations politically motivated. Critics, however, urged the government to pursue a thorough investigation, noting that corruption in local government administration has long undermined development in the state.
Civil society groups and commentators stressed the importance of transparency, urging both sides to allow independent investigations rather than trading accusations in the media. Stakeholders in governance advocacy noted that allegations of financial misconduct, whether substantiated or not, erode public trust in political institutions.
The Kano State Government has not yet provided documentary evidence to support its claims. Gwarzo said he remains confident that the truth will prevail and urged the public to disregard what he described as “a ridiculous attempt to tarnish his hard-earned integrity.”
