President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s football system following a series of disappointing results involving the country’s senior men’s and women’s national teams. Tinubu said the overhaul was necessary to address longstanding structural problems that have prevented Nigeria from consistently converting its deep pool of football talent, significant public investment and passionate fan base into sustained international success.
The directive comes amid growing scrutiny of the administration of Nigerian football and the performance of the national teams. The setbacks have renewed calls for stronger governance, better youth development, improved infrastructure and greater accountability within the sport.
Nigeria has historically been one of Africa’s football powers. The men’s national team, the Super Eagles, won the Africa Cup of Nations three times, in 1980, 1994 and 2013 and reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup in 1994, 1998 and 2014. The women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have dominated African women’s football, winning a record 11 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles.
Nigeria also has a long record of producing internationally recognized players, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in major European leagues.
Despite that history, inconsistent administration, funding concerns, infrastructure challenges and weaknesses in grassroots development have repeatedly raised questions about the sustainability of Nigeria’s football system.
Tinubu’s order signals an attempt to address those issues at a structural level rather than focusing solely on the performance of individual coaches or players. The reform is expected to place greater emphasis on institutional accountability, talent development and the long-term strengthening of Nigerian football, as the country seeks to restore its status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
