A devastating weekend in Benue State has left over 61 people dead and many more injured in two separate attacks by armed herdsmen and a communal clash. The attacks occurred in Apa and Gwer West Local Government Areas, while the communal clash took place in Gwer East LGA.
Armed Herdsmen Attacks
According to eyewitnesses, the crisis in Apa started on Sunday afternoon when armed herders invaded Ijaha Ibele Ochekwu, killing two people and injuring several others. The attackers later launched a full-scale assault on Edikwu Ankpali community, resulting in the deaths of 28 people, including women and children.
In Gwer West LGA, the marauders stormed Tse Antswam community, shooting at everything in sight and claiming over 18 lives. Many people were declared missing, and several others were battling for their lives after sustaining severe injuries.
Communal Clashes
In Gwer East LGA, a communal clash between Mbakine and Ojumole communities resulted in the deaths of 15 people and the destruction of over 200 houses. The crisis started as a minor quarrel between two youths at a marketplace on Friday and escalated over the weekend.
Authorities React
The Chairman of the Gwer West Traditional Council, Chief Daniel Abomtse, lamented the persistent attacks on his subjects by armed herders. The Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, confirmed the attacks and stated that tactical teams had been deployed to the affected areas.
Efforts are being made to stem the crisis, with local government officials and community leaders calling for peaceful resolution.
