The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced that starting July 1, 2025, individuals found guilty of environmental offences will face a ₦250,000 fine or a three-month jail term.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this via the government’s official X handle during a media briefing, warning that the state will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental violations.
“From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics begins. Offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets, or deface our environment will face stiff penalties,” Wahab stated.
He further revealed that over 3,000 offenders have already been arrested, with increased surveillance and public awareness campaigns underway to strengthen enforcement efforts.
Wahab emphasized that existing laws prohibiting cart pushing, public defecation, and illegal street trading remain in force. He called on residents to embrace cleanliness, especially as the Sallah celebration approaches.
“This is about saving our environment—for us and for the generations to come. Let’s celebrate the coming Sallah with cleanliness and responsibility,” he said.
The commissioner urged residents to properly bag their waste and avoid dumping in drains or road medians, stressing the importance of handing over refuse to assigned PSP operators.
“We all have a duty to protect our Lagos. The time for change is now!” Wahab concluded.
