Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has expressed the team’s readiness to give their best in the upcoming 2024 WAFCON tournament in Morocco. Despite recent distractions, Ajibade is confident that the players are prepared to take on the challenge and bring home a 10th WAFCON title.
Ajibade scored a brace in the Falcons’ 2-0 win over Cameroon in a friendly match at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Tuesday. This was the team’s first game since November 2024, and Ajibade was impressed with the team’s performance.
With about a month to the start of the tournament, the Nigeria Football Federation had arranged a two-legged friendly against the Indomitable Lionesses, but it was reduced to one due to logistics. Despite this, Ajibade is positive about the team’s prospects, saying, “Right now, the mood is positive. Even though there are back-and-forth distractions, we understand the responsibilities that lie ahead.”
The 2024 WAFCON will be played from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, and Nigeria are in Group B with Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Ajibade is determined to lead the team to victory, saying, “As players, it’s an honour to play for the nation. We’re positive, we’re excited, and we’re looking forward to the tournament. Of course, we will give our best as always.”
The 2024 WAFCON will also be a key tournament for Ajibade, as she is expected to join a new club ahead of next season. After spending four years with Atletico Women, where she made 139 appearances and scored 40 goals, Ajibade is set to start a new chapter in her career. Despite this, she remains focused on helping the Falcons win the WAFCON title.
