No fewer than 12.9 million Muslim pilgrims from around the world visited the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, between Dhul Qada 15 and Dhul Hijjah 1, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Among them, approximately 666,580 worshippers had the opportunity to visit the Holy Rawdah, a revered section within the mosque.
In preparation for the influx of visitors, the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque implemented extensive services to ensure a safe, clean, and spiritually uplifting experience.
Key efforts included:
Transportation support for 161,802 beneficiaries within mosque courtyards
Distribution of 301,802 meals to fasting pilgrims
Supply of 218,336 bottles of Zamzam water, with total consumption reaching 3,360 tons
Waste removal of 312 tons and use of 41,675 litres of disinfectants and sterilisers
Application of 7 kilograms of incense and 39 litres of high-end perfumes and oils to keep the environment fragrant and serene
Pilgrims were reminded to uphold the sanctity of the mosque by observing proper etiquette and respectful conduct. It was noted that prayers offered at the Prophet’s Mosque carry great spiritual rewards—equivalent to 1,000 prayers elsewhere, except at Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah.
According to scholarly consensus, men are permitted to visit the Prophet Muhammad’s grave and offer salutations, while women are advised not to visit graves. Visitors were also encouraged to visit only the Mosque of Quba besides the Prophet’s Mosque, as praying there holds the reward of performing an Umrah.
These services and guidelines reflect the dedication of the Saudi leadership to ensuring a well-organized, respectful, and fulfilling experience for all pilgrims.
