Nigerian singer and songwriter, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has shared her thoughts on the growing trend of established artistes launching record labels to sign upcoming talent.
In a recent interview with media personality VJ Adams, Simi expressed concerns that many established musicians sign new acts as a personal achievement rather than out of genuine commitment to their growth. According to her, signing an artist should not be treated as a mere milestone or side project.
“I can sign an artist, but I think that it’s not fair when an artist signs another artist just as a milestone,” she said. “Because for that artist, it’s just a passion project for them and not necessarily to accomplish a goal. But then, that’s their life.”
She emphasized that only individuals who are genuinely passionate about the music business should venture into managing other artists. For her, being responsible for another musician’s career requires more than fame or influence—it demands consistency, belief, and long-term dedication.
“So that whether or not the artist is thriving at the moment, they will still believe in the artist. Whether or not the song that you thought would blow did not blow, are you willing to keep going?” she asked. “That’s actually somebody’s life. That’s their dream.”
Reflecting on her own journey, Simi recalled questioning the motives of those who once signed her. “How do you see me? Am I just a box you are ticking, or is it as important to you as it is to me?”
While she acknowledged she has the capacity to sign and mentor a rising star, Simi admitted she isn’t sure she possesses the passion and energy required to fully commit to such a demanding responsibility.
“It takes a lot,” she concluded. “And that’s why I think the record label business should be left for those who are truly committed to nurturing talent—not just making statements.”
