A UEFA official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the fatal incident but declined to provide further details. CNN has reached out to UEFA for an official statement.
The fall occurred during the first period of extra time, as the match intensified and emotions among players and fans ran high. Emergency responders, stadium stewards, and police quickly secured the area where the incident took place.
Despite the somber event, the match continued, with Portugal ultimately clinching the victory in a penalty shootout.
Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente opened his post-match press conference by addressing the tragedy:
“Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today. My condolences to the family,” he said solemnly.
The identity of the deceased fan has not yet been released, and further details are expected pending UEFA’s response and official investigation.
