The Magistrates’ Court in Oshodi, Lagos, has remanded 34 individuals for illegally occupying the median on the Ojo-Alaba Road corridor. The suspects, comprising 32 males and two females, were arrested for various offenses, including trading, residing, and defecation on the road median and setbacks.
According to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the suspects were apprehended during an enforcement operation conducted by the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI. The operation was supported by the OP MESA team from the NNS Beecroft naval base at Apapa.
Gbadegesin stated that the suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, and have been remanded in custodial detention until July 22, 2025. The LAWMA boss emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment, and warned that the agency would continue to take enforcement actions against individuals and groups that engage in activities that compromise the environment.
The remanding of the suspects is part of the Lagos State government’s efforts to address the issue of environmental degradation and promote a clean and healthy environment. The government has been working to improve waste management and sanitation in the state, and has implemented various initiatives to reduce the occupation of medians and other public spaces.
The action taken by LAWMA and the court is a step in the right direction towards maintaining the beauty and safety of Lagos State. The government will continue to work towards ensuring that the environment is protected and preserved for the benefit of all residents.
