Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo has advised Victor Osimhen to strike a balance in his next career move amid ongoing transfer speculation. Obodo believes that Osimhen’s high release clause and salary demands have discouraged top European clubs from pursuing him.
According to Obodo, Osimhen’s wages and the clause Napoli has put on him are scaring clubs away. “I know Osimhen would still like to play European football and achieve a lot but the clause Napoli put on him and his wages is scaring clubs away,” Obodo said in an interview with (link unavailable) “The clubs do not want to make a decision that will bounce back and make them regret.”
Obodo also criticized the way Nigerian players are often perceived compared to their South American counterparts. “Nigeria does not package their players well,” he said. “If Osimhen was Brazilian, they (European top clubs) would have signed him since. The way some Nigerians talk about their countrymen is not fair.”
The former Udinese star urged Osimhen to carefully weigh his options. “For me, it is left for Osimhen to compromise if he wants to stay in Europe or go to Al Hilal for the wages,” Obodo said. “Whatever decision he makes, we should just pray he does not make the wrong decision.”
Osimhen, 26, recently concluded a loan spell at Turkish side Galatasaray, scoring 37 goals in 41 appearances. The club is reportedly keen to sign him on a permanent deal. The striker, who turned down a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, is also attracting interest from Juventus, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
It remains to be seen what Osimhen’s next move will be, but Obodo’s advice highlights the challenges he faces in making a decision that will impact his career.
