The North South Power Foundation has presented some food items to the Niger State government for the victims of the tragic flood that overwhelmed Mokwa Local Government Area, a fortnight ago. The flood disaster, which followed a torrential rainfall, killed nearly 200 people and destroyed over 50 houses. Over 3000 residents were displaced in the incident, leaving many without access to basic necessities.

The North South Power Foundation’s donation is part of the numerous efforts by Nigerians and organizations to support the victims. The federal government had pledged N2 billion for the relocation of the displaced victims and the rebuilding of the houses affected by the incident. The state government also made a N1 billion donation, while the Borno State government donated N300 million. Additionally, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, made a N20 million donation.

The North South Power Foundation’s donation consisted of 50 bags of 25kg rice, 50 bags of 25kg beans, 50 bags of 10kg semovita, 50 cartons of spaghetti, 50 bags of salt, 50 cartons of Maggi, 50 gallons of 5kg Kings oil, and 50 gallons of 5kg palm oil. The consultant of the firm on Corporate Social Responsibility, Hassan Abdullahi, led the team to the Niger State capital to make the presentation. Abdullahi expressed his condolences to the state government and the victims, saying, “I am here with my team from the North South Power Foundation Shiroro. We are here to commiserate with the Niger State government over the unfortunate incident that occurred in Mokwa a few days ago, and in our own little way of identifying with the victims, we are presenting these items.”

The Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Suleiman, received the food items on behalf of the state government. He thanked the foundation for the items and assured that they would be delivered to the victims immediately. “We have received these food items from the North South Power Foundation for what has happened in Mokwa. The victims will get this intervention from the Foundation any moment from now, and we pray that Allah will continue to bless and promote them,” he said.

The donation by the North South Power Foundation is a welcome relief to the flood victims, who have been struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. The foundation’s effort is part of the growing trend of corporate social responsibility in Nigeria, where companies are taking proactive steps to support communities in need. As the state government continues to work on rebuilding and rehabilitating the affected areas, the support from organizations like the North South Power Foundation will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the victims.
