Security has been heightened in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s visit for the grand reception of Governor Umo Eno into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday. The event, scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, will be hosted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.
Governor Eno officially defected to the APC on June 6, 2025, during a ceremony at the Government House Banquet Hall in Uyo, in the presence of the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State. The planned reception was confirmed in a statement issued by Aniekan Umanah, chairman of the media and publicity subcommittee for the event.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has disclosed that adequate security measures are being put in place for the event. In a press conference, Azare assured that the police command will deploy a significant number of personnel to ensure Akwa Ibom remains safe and visitors have a hitch-free experience. He also warned would-be criminals to desist from perpetrating any form of crime during the occasion, citing the arrest of several suspected criminals, including armed robbers, kidnappers, and cultists.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Namadi Sambo has denied reports of his purported defection to the APC. In a statement by his Media Adviser, Umar Sani, Sambo reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing out that a picture circulating with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani was not recent. Sambo’s statement noted that he remains a dedicated member of the PDP with no intention of leaving the party.
