The Kano State Police Command has arraigned a 19-year-old man, Ibrahim Abubakar, for attempted suicide after he climbed a tall billboard structure in Kano and threatened to jump. The incident, which occurred on Monday at Gadar Lado along Zaria Road, caused panic among onlookers and sparked discussions on the dangers of social media obsession and mental health struggles among youths.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Abubakar was charged to Magistrate Court Number 5, Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, after being rescued by security operatives. The young man, an indigene of Adamawa State, allegedly climbed the high advertising structure and vowed to end his life if popular TikTok influencers he follows did not show up at the scene.
The police acted swiftly to rescue Abubakar, taking him to the hospital for a check-up and providing him with food, as he had spent a long time on the billboard. The incident drew a large crowd of onlookers and raised concerns about the impact of social media on young people’s mental health.
The court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming days. The police have not disclosed what actions will be taken against Abubakar, but the case highlights the need for increased awareness and support for mental health issues in Nigeria. The incident also raises questions about the influence of social media on young people’s lives and the potential consequences of becoming too deeply invested in online personalities and trends.
As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how the court will rule and what implications this will have for Abubakar and others who may be struggling with similar issues. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health and seeking help when needed.
