A New York jury delivered a mixed verdict in the trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs on Wednesday, convicting the music mogul of transporting women across state lines for prostitution while acquitting him of more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.
The conviction carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison for each count, with Combs facing a potential total of 20 years behind bars. The charges stemmed from allegations that he transported women, including his ex-girlfriends Cassie Ventura and another woman who testified under the pseudonym “Jane,” across state lines for prostitution.
Combs’ lawyers argued that the women were willing participants, and the jury ultimately acquitted him of the most serious charges, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which could have put him behind bars for life. The acquittal was met with cheers and relief from Combs’ supporters, who were present in the courtroom.
As the verdict was read, Combs’ mother, Janice Combs, was visibly emotional, telling ABC News that her heart was “fluttering.” Combs himself showed relief and happiness when the not-guilty verdicts were announced, particularly in relation to the sex trafficking charges involving his ex-girlfriends. He lifted his fist and gripped the hand of his attorney, Teny Geragos, in a moment of triumph.
The trial featured disturbing testimony from Combs’ former partners, who alleged physical and sexual abuse. However, the jury’s verdict suggests that they did not find sufficient evidence to convict Combs of the more serious charges. Combs’ reaction in court, including shaking his head and putting up prayer hands when the judge mentioned the possibility of staying in custody, added a moment of levity to the proceedings.
