A wave of violence has hit Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, as gunmen launched coordinated attacks on two towns, leaving at least three people dead. The attacks occurred on Tuesday in Ekwulobia community in Aguata Local Government Area and Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen first struck Ekwulobia, killing two civilians in broad daylight. The attackers also set ablaze a brown Toyota Sienna vehicle reportedly belonging to the Anambra State Vigilante Group. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m., within a stone’s throw of a nearby police station and a four-way military checkpoint. Despite the proximity to security formations, the attackers reportedly had a field day, shooting sporadically and causing residents to flee for safety.
In a swift response, a joint security team led by the Anambra State Police Command engaged the gunmen in a fierce gun duel, neutralizing one of the armed assailants. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, an automatic pump-action gun, and four vehicles used by the attackers. The bodies of the two civilians killed in the attack have been recovered and deposited in the morgue.
In a related development, the gunmen also attacked Oko community, where they attempted to set a police station ablaze but were repelled by officers on duty. The security forces successfully defended the facility, preventing the attackers from achieving their objective.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that two civilians were killed and one gunman neutralized during the attack. The command’s spokesperson noted that the police are working to apprehend the fleeing attackers and restore peace to the affected communities.
The attacks have sparked fear and concern among residents, who are calling for increased security measures to protect lives and property. As the situation continues to unfold, the state’s security agencies are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further attacks.
