A recent warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has triggered widespread panic across 20 states in Nigeria, with residents in floodplains and high-risk zones beginning to relocate to safer areas. The states affected include Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
According to NiMet’s July flood alert, these states are likely to experience flash floods due to heavy rainfall in the coming months. Residents have been advised to take urgent precautions to minimize the impact of the impending floods. Some of the recommended measures include moving to safer areas if necessary, clearing blocked drainages, preparing emergency kits, and turning off gas and electricity during rainstorms.
The Federal Government has sounded the alarm over the imminent flood crisis, warning that over 1,200 communities in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory are at risk of flooding. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has also identified 148 local government areas across 31 states as high-risk zones for flooding.
In Rivers State, the government has issued an urgent advisory to residents, warning of an imminent flood risk. The state government has also cracked down on illegal land reclamation, which is believed to contribute to the flood risk.
As the situation continues to unfold, residents in the affected states are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The government’s prompt action and warnings are expected to mitigate the impact of the floods, but residents must also take responsibility for their own safety.
Precautionary Measures:
– Relocation: Residents in high-risk zones are advised to relocate to safer areas temporarily.
– Drainage Clearance: Clearing blocked drainages can help prevent flash floods.
– Emergency Kits: Preparing emergency kits with essential items can help residents cope with the flood situation.
– Safety Precautions: Turning off gas and electricity during rainstorms can help prevent accidents.
The affected states are urged to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the floods, including reinforcing mudslide prevention measures and conducting community awareness campaigns.
