The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully raided a cybercrime training centre, popularly known as a “Yahoo academy,” in Umuahia, Abia State. The operation, carried out by operatives from the EFCC’s Uyo Zonal Directorate on July 18, 2025, resulted in the arrest of 23 suspects, including eight trainees undergoing cybercrime training and 15 others suspected of being actively involved in internet fraud.

The cybercrime training centre, known as “Yahoo-Yahoo Hustle Kingdom,” was located at Doofco Palace building, behind Government College Umuahia. According to the EFCC, the raid was conducted based on credible intelligence, which led to the arrest of the suspects at the training centre and other locations within Umuahia, including Umudike, Ahiaeke, and Umugu.

Items recovered from the suspects include two cars, 15 laptops, and 34 mobile phones. The EFCC has confirmed that the suspects will soon be charged to court. The arrested suspects include Toona Henry, Tavershima Solomon, Chi Orseer James, Ubee Benjamin, Gabriel Ibe Ifeanyi, Tindue Godwin, Muhammed Terwase Micheal, and Destiny Andrew, among others.

This operation highlights the EFCC’s continued efforts to combat cybercrime and internet fraud in Nigeria. The commission has repeatedly expressed concern over the glamorization of internet fraud among Nigerian youths and the emergence of organized “academies” aimed at indoctrinating and training them. These operations, often run by older fraudsters or “Yahoo bosses,” not only teach technical skills but also reinforce criminal mindsets and justifications.

The EFCC’s actions demonstrate its commitment to tackling cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice. As the suspects face legal proceedings, this operation serves as a warning to those involved in similar activities, emphasizing the importance of lawful behavior and the consequences of engaging in cybercrime.
