A yet-to-be-identified man was shot dead by gunmen at Ojo-Igbede in the Ojo area of Lagos State. According to eyewitnesses, the victim had stepped out to buy a plate of food from a vendor in the community when two men on a motorcycle approached him. The assailants, who wore caps, forced the deceased victim to kneel and shot him in the process. Other customers present at the scene scampered for safety as the incident occurred.
The eyewitness, who craved anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, revealed that the victim was new to the area and had only come out to buy cooked food. “The moment he moved close to them, they asked him to lie down. At first, he declined. He obliged shortly after, and that was when he was shot in the head,” the source said. The victim had barely spent five minutes at the scene when the attack happened.
An anti-cultism advocacy page on X shared details of the incident, stating that the deceased had just moved into the area and was shot while waiting in line to buy food. “While waiting for his turn, men on a bike called him out, told him to kneel (others said lie down), then shot him in the head multiple times before driving away,” the platform stated. The incident caused panic in the community, with residents expressing concerns about their safety.
Another resident, who gave his name simply as Bode, said the incident had made them work more on their security because they didn’t know who was next. “There was serious panic in the area after the incident, and this made us work more on our security because we don’t know who is next,” he said. The Lagos State Police Command has yet to comment on the incident, as efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful.
This incident comes on the heels of another tragic event in Lagos, where a man was stabbed to death during a public brawl in the Lagos Island area of the state. The police arrested three suspects in connection with the incident. The recent incidents highlight the need for increased security measures in the state to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
