Severe flooding has struck parts of Niger State, Nigeria, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake. The floods have submerged at least 18 communities in the Lapai Local Government Area, including Dere, Eshi, Apataku, and Tsakanabi, among others. The affected communities are facing immense challenges, with farmlands destroyed and homes inundated with water. The Niger State Government has warned residents in flood-prone zones to relocate to higher ground without delay, emphasizing the importance of early action to prevent further loss of life and property.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication, Media, and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, highlighted the recent tragedy in Mokwa as a wake-up call for vulnerable communities. In late May, torrential rains triggered flash floods in Mokwa, resulting in over 500 deaths, 600 missing persons, and widespread destruction. The government is taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the floods, including launching an aggressive public sensitization campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of flooding and the need for early evacuation. Traditional rulers, community heads, and religious leaders have been urged to support the effort by mobilizing and educating their people on the risks and necessary precautions.
According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), 15 out of the 25 local government areas in Niger State are at high risk of flooding during the rainy season. The federal government has also directed residents in four LGAs to vacate lowlands ahead of heavy rainfall expected in the coming days. The government’s early warning system aims to prevent loss of life and property by alerting residents to the potential dangers of flooding.
The floods have had a devastating impact on the affected communities, with farmlands destroyed and homes submerged. The loss of crops and livestock will likely exacerbate food insecurity and economic hardship for the affected communities. The government’s response efforts are critical in providing relief and support to those affected by the floods.
