Thousands of youths, led by popular activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, took to the streets of Awka, the capital of Anambra State, to raise awareness about the level of insecurity in the state. The peaceful walk, which began at Aroma Junction and ended at Ring Road Junction, was organized in response to the recent kidnap and killing of a young businessman, Mr. Martins Onyekere, the CEO of Fish Magnet.
The activist had announced his plans to stage the protest last weekend, citing the need to bring attention to the insecurity plaguing the state. Despite warnings from the Anambra State Police Command, which cautioned VeryDarkMan against making statements or taking actions that could incite tension or breach public peace, the protest went ahead peacefully.
The police command had advised the activist to allow the family of the deceased to mourn their son in peace, without holding a gathering that could upset the peace of the state. However, it appears that the protest was well-planned and executed, with thousands of youths dressed in black attire participating in the walk.
Interestingly, the protest march was joined by several government representatives, including the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Media, Mr. Ejimofor Opara, and the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. This development suggests that the government is taking the issue of insecurity in the state seriously and is willing to engage with activists and the public to address the problem.
The protest highlights the growing concern about insecurity in Anambra State, where kidnapping and other violent crimes have become increasingly common. The state government and security agencies must take concrete steps to address the root causes of insecurity and ensure the safety of citizens.
The peaceful protest led by VeryDarkMan serves as a call to action for the government and security agencies to prioritize the safety and security of citizens. It is essential for the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the kidnap and killing of Mr. Onyekere and bring the perpetrators to justice. The government must also take proactive measures to prevent further incidents and restore peace and security in the state.
