The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has categorically denied reports that it is planning to probe former Governor Udom Emmanuel, describing the claims as speculative and lacking factual basis. Deputy Speaker Kufreabasi Edidem made this known in a statement issued in Uyo, the state capital, on Tuesday.
Edidem explained that the House has not constituted any committee to investigate Emmanuel, contrary to reports in some media outlets. He stated that the attention of the leadership and members of the Assembly was drawn to a report in a newspaper publication of Monday, August 11, claiming that the immediate past governor was facing a probe by the House.
The Deputy Speaker clarified that what transpired at the plenary session on Thursday, August 7, was that a member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr. Uwem Imoh-Ita, raised a matter of urgent public importance concerning the non-payment of salaries of employees of the Coconut Plantation for seven months. An ad hoc committee was constituted to investigate the issue and report back within one month.
Edidem urged media organizations to always verify their facts from official legislative sources before publication, stressing that inaccurate and sensational reporting not only misleads the public but also undermines the credibility of democratic institutions. He emphasized that journalism is a noble profession with a strong ethical bent, and media professionals should know where to draw the line between facts and sensationalism.
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly remains focused on its constitutional mandate, especially in ensuring that public sector operations are handled transparently and lawfully. The public is advised to disregard the report on the alleged probe of former Governor Udom Emmanuel in its entirety.
