The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported a significant decline in fuel consumption in Nigeria for June 2025. According to the authority, the total fuel evacuation fell to 1.44 billion liters, representing a 16.42% decrease compared to May’s total supply of 1.768 billion liters. This translates to a daily average evacuation of 48.025 million liters.
The NMDPRA report revealed that diesel supply increased slightly by 1.73% to 432.18 million liters in June, up from 424.83 million liters in May. However, diesel distribution declined by 23.23% from 552.35 million liters in May to 424.06 million liters in June. Household Kerosene supply and distribution both recorded a 13% decrease, with June figures at 7.79 million liters, down from nearly 9 million liters in May. The sharpest decline was seen in automotive gasoline supply, which dropped by nearly 48% from 72.36 million liters in May to 37.66 million liters in June.
The NMDPRA report also detailed fuel truck-out volumes to individual states, totaling the 1.44 billion liters evacuated in June. Lagos received the highest volume at 205.66 million liters, followed by Ogun with 88.69 million liters, the Federal Capital Territory with 77.51 million liters, and Oyo with 72.81 million liters. These figures indicate the varying demand for fuel across different regions in Nigeria.
The decline in overall supply and distribution suggests continued challenges in the petroleum midstream and downstream sectors, impacting national fuel consumption patterns in June. Despite these challenges, the NMDPRA has pledged to work closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen distribution and guarantee an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country.
The drop in fuel consumption in Nigeria is a significant development that highlights the need for sustained efforts to improve the petroleum sector. With the NMDPRA’s commitment to addressing the challenges in the sector, there is hope for a more stable and efficient supply of petroleum products in the country.
