Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has categorically ruled out swapping territory with Russia as part of any potential peace deal, emphasizing that conceding land would only embolden Russia to continue its aggression. In a recent interview with the BBC, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine’s survival depends on its unity and that any territorial compromises would make the country weaker. “We chose this path [towards Europe],” he said. “We want security guarantees. Any territorial compromises would make us weaker as a state”.
Zelenskyy is set to meet with European leaders and US President Donald Trump in Berlin, ahead of Trump’s summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian leader has been engaging in intense diplomatic efforts, holding over 30 conversations with world leaders and high-ranking officials to build support for Ukraine’s position. Despite recent Russian gains in the eastern Donetsk region, a member of the Ukrainian delegation traveling with Zelenskyy to Berlin said these developments did not influence preparations for the talks.
Russian forces have made limited gains in the Donetsk region, advancing up to 10 kilometers in some areas. However, Zelenskyy remains resolute in his determination to resist Russian aggression. “Russian attacks are already happening from several directions,” he warned, adding that Ukraine’s forces can hold out until they launch a counter-offensive. Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for more military aid from the West, emphasizing that modern weapons would bring peace closer.
Zelenskyy’s call for a “fair peace” underscores the need for a just and equitable solution to the conflict. He believes that Western weapons would speed up peace, as “weapons are the only language Russia understands.” The Ukrainian leader has been pressing for more air defense systems and long-range arms to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
As the conflict continues, Zelenskyy’s stance on territorial integrity remains unwavering. With diplomatic efforts underway and military aid being discussed, the international community watches closely to see how the situation unfolds. Ukraine’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity remains at the forefront of the conflict, with Zelenskyy leading the charge for a fair and just peace.
