The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving police inspector, Ojo Oloruntobi, alongside three civilian accomplices for their alleged involvement in robbery, extortion, and harassment of residents in Benin City. The suspects—identified as Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho—were intercepted on August 15, 2025, by operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team while operating with a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the arrest followed a viral video in which a victim alleged he was abducted by policemen, dispossessed of his phone and other valuables, and subjected to intimidation. Acting on the complaint and corroborating intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, directed that the perpetrators be tracked down and brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the command disclosed that preliminary investigations confirmed the involvement of Inspector Oloruntobi and his civilian collaborators in a series of coordinated criminal activities that had been terrorising residents. “The Edo State Police Command strongly condemns this shameful and criminal conduct. The arrested officer and his collaborators will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police stressed that the command maintains zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct, warning that any officer found engaging in misconduct, extortion, or brutality would be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted without hesitation. He further assured the public that the Force remains committed to restoring trust, protecting lives and property, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police.

Meanwhile, the police have urged members of the public, especially the victim in the viral video, to come forward with credible information to aid the ongoing investigation. The command reiterated that rogue elements within the police will not be shielded, as efforts continue to cleanse the system and ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
