The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced the Nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, a crucial step ahead of future general elections. The process begins with the online pre-registration phase, allowing eligible citizens to start their registration from the comfort of their homes via the portal (link unavailable)
The online pre-registration phase started on August 18, 2025, and will be followed by in-person registration, which is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025. Registration will take place across INEC’s 37 state offices and 774 local government area offices nationwide, ensuring easy access for prospective voters. The CVR exercise is open to new voters aged 18 and above, individuals seeking to collect or transfer their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and those needing to replace lost or damaged PVCs.
INEC has cautioned against multiple registrations, warning that violators could face penalties under the law. The commission emphasized the importance of voter registration in ensuring inclusive participation in Nigeria’s democratic process and urged eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity. Nigerians can reach out to INEC via its call center on 0700-CALL-INEC (0700-2255-4632) or through the short code 4632 for further inquiries.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to deepening democracy by ensuring inclusiveness and equal access for all eligible voters. The commission assured that every eligible voter would have the opportunity to register ahead of upcoming elections. With the CVR exercise expected to run for several months, INEC will publish a preliminary voter register for public scrutiny before finalizing the list of eligible voters for the 2027 elections.
Eligible Nigerians can commence their registration online and later visit designated registration centers for in-person registration. The commission has emphasized the importance of this exercise in shaping the credibility of Nigeria’s elections, making it a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic journey.
