Tragedy has struck Nigerian communities in Libya and South Africa, with reports emerging of four Nigerians who lost their lives in separate incidents. In Libya, two Nigerians, identified as Collins and Osas, died under circumstances suspected to be linked to poisoning in Tripoli, the capital city. According to sources, the victims had traveled to Tripoli on July 20 with a friend whose identity remains unknown.

The two Nigerians, who resided in Misrata, had reportedly gone to a place called Oshofana in Tripoli to have fun with their friend. After spending four days there, their friend decided to return to Misrata, but Collins and Osas chose to stay behind. Two days later, their friend claimed to have received a call informing him that the two had died of suspected food poisoning. However, the circumstances surrounding their deaths have raised suspicions, with some questioning the friend’s account of the events.

The incident has generated controversy, with some colleagues of the deceased expressing dissatisfaction with the friend’s explanation. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of their death. The deceased friends have since been buried in Libya. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) spokesperson, Adulrahman Balogun, stated that he was not aware of the incident but assured that the commission would work on the matter if the families submitted a petition.

In a separate incident, two Nigerians, identified as Austin and Ayo, were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Durban, South Africa. The gunmen, numbering three, stormed Austin’s office around 8 pm, wearing masks, and shot both men on the spot. A friend of one of the deceased, Fidelis, confirmed that both victims died instantly.

These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and security of Nigerians living abroad. The Nigerian government may need to intensify consular efforts to protect its citizens and ensure their well-being in foreign countries. As investigations continue into these tragic events, the Nigerian community remains on edge, calling for increased measures to safeguard their lives and interests abroad.
