The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sokoto State chapter, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident that claimed several lives at Kojiyo River in Goronyo Local Government Area. The party, in a condolence message released on Tuesday by its State Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, extended its sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for the safe recovery of those still missing.
According to the party, the devastating incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures across waterways in the state and beyond. The PDP called on the authorities concerned to intensify rescue and recovery operations to account for missing passengers while also ensuring that immediate relief and support are provided to survivors and affected families. “This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call to improve the safety of our riverine communities,” the statement stressed.
Sanyinnawal assured that the PDP would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that the victims’ families receive the necessary assistance. He also urged both state and federal governments to adopt proactive strategies, including the provision of safer transport facilities, stricter enforcement of safety standards, and improved monitoring of water transport operations to prevent a recurrence.
The party further encouraged the grieving families to draw strength from the solidarity and compassion of well-meaning Nigerians during this difficult period. “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may their loved ones find solace in the outpouring of love and support,” the statement added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accident occurred on Sunday when a boat carrying 51 passengers, motorcycles, and goods capsized on the Kojiyo River. The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed on Monday that 26 people had been rescued, while search efforts for 25 others are still ongoing
