The dispute centers around the conferment of the Okanlomo of Oodua title on Ibadan-based business mogul, Dotun Sanusi, by the Ooni. Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, has stepped in to mediate, urging both monarchs to pursue an amicable resolution.
The controversy began when the Ooni bestowed the title on Sanusi during the unveiling of a social media and business networking platform in Ibadan. However, the Alaafin responded by issuing a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding that the Ooni reverse the title or face consequences. The Ooni’s spokesman, Moses Olafare, has stated that the monarch would not be swayed by threats, leaving the matter to public opinion.
Adams emphasized the importance of unity among Yoruba monarchs, warning that disunity could embolden external forces. “The two monarchs are our pride in Yorubaland and indeed in Africa. We cannot afford to have disunity between them,” he said. Adams has reached out to Yoruba elders and the monarchs themselves, urging them to resolve the issue peacefully.
