A diplomatic effort is underway to resolve the growing tension between two prominent Yoruba monarchs, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade. The dispute centers around the conferment of the Okanlomo of Oodua title on Ibadan-based business mogul, Dotun Sanusi, by the Ooni. Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, has stepped in to mediate, urging both monarchs to pursue an amicable resolution.

The controversy began when the Ooni bestowed the title on Sanusi during the unveiling of a social media and business networking platform in Ibadan. However, the Alaafin responded by issuing a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding that the Ooni reverse the title or face consequences. The Ooni’s spokesman, Moses Olafare, has stated that the monarch would not be swayed by threats, leaving the matter to public opinion.

Adams emphasized the importance of unity among Yoruba monarchs, warning that disunity could embolden external forces. “The two monarchs are our pride in Yorubaland and indeed in Africa. We cannot afford to have disunity between them,” he said. Adams has reached out to Yoruba elders and the monarchs themselves, urging them to resolve the issue peacefully. The region is currently facing security challenges, and Adams believes that the monarchs have a crucial role to play in maintaining peace and stability.

The dispute has also raised questions about the hierarchy of Yoruba monarchs. According to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Ooni of Ife is the most powerful king in Yorubaland, followed by the Alaafin of Oyo. The Ooni is seen as the custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, and his supremacy dates back to the origin of the Yoruba tribe.

Adams’ efforts to resolve the dispute are aimed at sustaining peace in Yorubaland. He stressed that the monarchs’ unity is essential for the region’s stability and progress. With the region facing security challenges, it is crucial for the monarchs to work together to address these issues. The outcome of this dispute will likely have significant implications for the Yoruba kingdom and its people.
