The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik), Awka, has taken disciplinary action following the tragic death of a 100-level law student, Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana, who passed away on July 9, 2025, after complications related to her diabetic condition.
Ajana reportedly died three days after being rushed to the university’s medical centre. Her roommates at Elmada Hostel alleged that their attempts to retrieve her insulin medication were hindered when the hostel mistress allegedly demanded ₦120,000 for a spare room key, with each roommate expected to pay ₦40,000.
According to the students, repeated pleas stressing the urgency of Ajana’s medical needs were ignored, a delay they believe contributed to her health deterioration and eventual death.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 22, the university announced the three-month suspension of the medical personnel involved, pending the conclusion of investigations.
Regarding the hostel mistress, Unizik clarified that Elmada Hostel is privately managed, though under the institution’s partnership, and demanded her immediate dismissal. The university further stated it would review its relationship with the hostel management to prevent similar incidents in the future
