The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) has arrested four individuals in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area, for allegedly impersonating its operatives and engaging in illegal activities. The suspects, who reportedly donned fake uniforms and carried counterfeit identity cards, were said to have harassed and extorted residents before their arrest following public complaints.

Confirming the development, the Director General of SASA, Monday Onwe, condemned the act, stressing that the squad had no authorised unit operating in Achalla. He explained that the sole authority to establish any such formation rests with Governor Chukwuma Soludo, adding that the illegal operations were damaging to the credibility and integrity of the state-sanctioned anti-touting task force.

Onwe further revealed that the suspects had allegedly intimidated residents with dangerous weapons during their activities. “The alleged actions of this group, including intimidation and extortion, are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. A thorough investigation has been launched, and anyone found guilty will face prosecution in a competent court of law,” he assured.

He also warned against the fraudulent use of the SASA name to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, stressing that the state government remained committed to safeguarding communities from criminal exploitation. According to him, recruitment into the anti-touting squad follows a strict procedure that includes mandatory training to ensure professionalism, discipline, and efficiency.

The Director General urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities. He reiterated that no individual can become a member of SASA without meeting the official requirements, adding that the government would continue to protect the public from impostors and fraudulent schemes.
