The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a significant increase in the cost of obtaining international passports, with new rates set to take effect from September 1, 2025. According to a statement signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the revised fees will only apply to applications made within Nigeria.
Under the new structure, the 32-page passport with five-year validity will now cost N100,000, while the 64-page passport with ten-year validity has been pegged at N200,000. However, fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged, with applicants continuing to pay $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, ten-year option.
The NIS explained that the upward review was necessary to sustain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring improved service delivery to citizens. The agency stressed that the adjustment was part of ongoing reforms in the immigration sector aimed at maintaining global standards and enhancing accessibility.
This is the second increase in less than a year. In August 2024, the Federal Government approved a hike that saw the cost of the 32-page, five-year passport rise from N35,000 to N50,000, while the 64-page, ten-year booklet moved from N70,000 to N100,000. Officials at the time justified the increment as essential to improve production and delivery processes.
The latest announcement has already stirred public debate, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the affordability of the new rates, especially at a time when the cost of living continues to rise. Nonetheless, the NIS maintains that the decision will help safeguard the integrity of the travel document and support efficient passport administration across the country.
