The Federal Government has announced the completion of a comprehensive review of school curricula across primary, secondary, and technical education levels in Nigeria. The reform, driven by the Ministry of Education, is designed to modernize teaching and learning, ensuring that educational content is more relevant, practical, and aligned with the needs of students in today’s rapidly changing world.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, who represented the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON), said the review was conducted in collaboration with key agencies. These include the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and other critical stakeholders within the education sector.
According to details released by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, the exercise was not only about restructuring subject offerings but also about deepening content to promote stronger learning outcomes. Under the new structure, pupils in Primary 1–3 will now take between 9 and 10 subjects, those in Primary 4–6 will take 10 to 12 subjects, while Junior Secondary School students will handle 12 to 14 subjects. At the Senior Secondary level, students will take 8 to 9 subjects, while technical schools will offer between 9 and 11 subjects.
Professor Ahmad explained that the revised curricula aim to reduce content overload, thereby creating more time for effective learning and understanding. She stressed that the reform reflects the government’s commitment to delivering education that equips learners with both academic knowledge and practical skills needed for future opportunities.
The Ministry of Education further assured parents, educators, and the general public that the rollout of the new curricula will be closely monitored to ensure smooth adoption in schools nationwide. With strict oversight mechanisms in place, the government says the reform will mark a new era of education delivery in Nigeria, better preparing young people for higher education, the workforce, and global competitiveness.
