Grimsby Town’s stunning Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United has been overshadowed by a £20,000 fine for breaching player registration rules. The English Football League (EFL) announced the sanction on Tuesday, revealing that the League Two side fielded an ineligible player during their dramatic second-round clash at Blundell Park on August 27.

The Mariners had shocked football fans by holding United to a 2-2 draw before knocking them out on penalties, a result hailed as one of the greatest nights in the club’s history. However, it later emerged that midfielder Clarke Oduor, signed on loan from Bradford City, was registered one minute after the 12:00 BST deadline the day before the match. Although Oduor played, the EFL confirmed that his registration breach violated competition rules.

Grimsby admitted the error, explaining that a computer glitch caused the late submission at 12:01. In a statement, the club stressed that the mistake was unintentional and quickly reported to the authorities. “We accept the fine and fully recognise the importance of following competition rules. We acted swiftly and transparently and remain committed to the highest professional standards,” the statement read.

The EFL imposed an immediate £10,000 payment, while the remaining £10,000 fine has been suspended until the end of the season, provided no further infractions occur. Despite the punishment, Grimsby retain their victory and place in the competition’s third round, where they will face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

While the fine dampens the celebrations, Grimsby’s progress remains intact, and supporters are now looking ahead to another chance at a giant-killing. The incident serves as a reminder of the strict regulations governing English football competitions, even as the Mariners continue to enjoy the glow of one of their most memorable cup triumphs.
