The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced an extension of the registration deadline for the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates. Initially scheduled to close on September 5, the registration window will now remain open until September 19, 2025.
The extension was confirmed through a statement released on WAEC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. According to the council, the move is aimed at giving more prospective candidates the opportunity to complete their registration and participate in the second series of the CB-WASSCE for private candidates this year.
“The registration period for CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2025—Second Series, has been extended to Friday, September 19, 2025. All prospective candidates are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity,” the announcement read.
While the decision has been welcomed by many candidates who had faced challenges meeting the earlier deadline, it has also reignited conversations around WAEC’s ongoing transition from manual to fully digital registration and examinations. Some stakeholders have expressed scepticism, citing concerns about technical glitches, accessibility, and the readiness of candidates and schools for a fully computer-based process.
Despite the mixed reactions, WAEC maintains that the digital shift will ultimately improve efficiency, reduce malpractice, and align its operations with global best practices. With the new deadline, thousands of private candidates now have an extended window to finalize their registration and prepare for the landmark computer-based examination.
