The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the clearance of all allowances and performance bonuses due to Nigerian athletes who participated in the recently concluded World Athletics Championships. The move comes as part of efforts to boost athletes’ morale and ensure transparency in the management of funds allocated for international sporting engagements.

According to officials, the payments cover camp allowances, competition stipends, and performance-related bonuses promised to the athletes before their departure for the global event. The NSC explained that prompt settlement of such entitlements was necessary to motivate athletes and guarantee their full focus on representing the country without distractions.

Athletes who competed at the championships had earlier raised concerns about delayed payments, but the Commission reassured them that all outstanding financial commitments would be addressed immediately after the competition. True to its word, the NSC has now fulfilled this promise, a move that has been welcomed by both athletes and stakeholders in Nigerian athletics.

Sports analysts have praised the Commission for taking the step, noting that previous experiences of unpaid bonuses and delayed allowances often led to frustration among athletes and, in some cases, affected their performances at major tournaments. This clearance, they say, signals a positive shift in the way sports administration is being handled in the country.

Some athletes who spoke after the confirmation expressed relief and gratitude to the NSC, describing the gesture as encouraging and a sign of respect for their hard work and sacrifices. They stressed that the timely payment of entitlements would help restore trust and build stronger relationships between athletes and sports authorities.

The World Athletics Championships saw Nigerian athletes put up commendable performances, with some advancing to the finals of their events, while others set new personal bests. Though the country did not secure a podium finish in certain categories, the athletes’ resilience and determination were widely applauded.

With the successful clearance of the allowances and bonuses, the NSC has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing athletes’ welfare. Officials further assured that lessons from the championships would guide better preparations for future international competitions, including the forthcoming Olympic Games.
