The Ekiti State Government has strongly condemned the recent attack on staff of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, warning that those responsible will face severe consequences. The assault, which reportedly left several health workers injured, has sparked outrage across the state and renewed calls for better protection of medical personnel.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, described the incident as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a threat to the healthcare delivery system.” He stressed that the government would not tolerate any form of violence against health workers who dedicate their lives to saving others.
According to reports, the attack occurred when relatives of a deceased patient stormed the hospital premises, alleging negligence in treatment. The situation escalated into violence, with some staff sustaining injuries and properties within the hospital damaged. Security operatives later intervened to restore order and prevent further escalation.
The state government has assured EKSUTH workers of its commitment to their safety, announcing plans to work with security agencies to investigate the matter and prosecute those involved. Dr. Filani also appealed to residents to seek redress through appropriate channels rather than resorting to violence.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the hospital has expressed deep concern over the rising trend of assaults on health workers, warning that such incidents could discourage professionals from performing their duties diligently. They urged the public to appreciate the challenges faced by medical staff, particularly in emergency situations where outcomes may not always be favorable.
Medical associations in Ekiti have also thrown their weight behind the hospital staff, calling on the government to implement stricter security measures within health facilities. They warned that continuous attacks could lead to strikes or withdrawal of services, which would further strain the state’s already burdened healthcare system.
As investigations continue, the Ekiti State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violence, assuring that justice would be served. Officials emphasised that safeguarding healthcare workers was essential to maintaining an effective and reliable medical system for the people of the state.
