The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, on Saturday paid a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. The visit comes ahead of Ladoja’s much-anticipated coronation as the next Olubadan, an event that has continued to attract national attention.
The Ooni, who arrived with a delegation of chiefs and palace officials, was warmly received by Ladoja and his family members. Both leaders held a closed-door meeting said to have centred on Yoruba unity, traditional leadership, and the preservation of cultural heritage in the South-West.
Speaking briefly after the meeting, Oba Ogunwusi congratulated Ladoja on his forthcoming installation, describing him as a respected statesman whose elevation to the Olubadan throne would further strengthen traditional institutions in Yorubaland. He expressed confidence that Ladoja’s reign would promote peace, harmony, and development in Ibadan and beyond.
Ladoja, in his response, thanked the Ooni for the historic visit and assured him of his commitment to using his position as Olubadan to foster unity and cooperation among Yoruba monarchs. He emphasised that traditional rulers must work together to complement government efforts in promoting socio-economic progress across the region.
The visit has been described by observers as symbolic, highlighting the bond between two of the most influential thrones in Yorubaland. It also underscores the growing anticipation surrounding Ladoja’s coronation, which is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Residents of Ibadan trooped out in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the Ooni as his convoy made its way through the city, with many hailing the gesture as a sign of respect and solidarity.
As preparations for the coronation continue, the meeting between the Ooni of Ife and the Olubadan-designate has been seen as a step towards strengthening traditional alliances and reaffirming the enduring relevance of Yoruba royalty in contemporary Nigeria.
