President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined other world leaders in reiterating support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, stressing that the move is essential to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s position on the need for a two-state solution that guarantees security for Israel and justice for the Palestinian people.
The Nigerian leader said the prolonged conflict has continued to destabilize the region, worsen humanitarian crises, and threaten global peace. He urged the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts toward ensuring that Palestinians achieve self-determination, while Israel enjoys the assurance of safe and secure borders. According to him, the cycle of violence, displacement, and mistrust can only end when both sides embrace compromise backed by international consensus.
Tinubu aligned Nigeria with growing calls from world leaders who have demanded urgent steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. He noted that peace could only be sustainable if it is anchored on fairness, justice, and mutual respect, adding that the plight of millions of Palestinians living under difficult conditions cannot be ignored by the global community.
While acknowledging Israel’s security concerns, the President emphasized that the indiscriminate bombing of civilian populations and the denial of basic rights to Palestinians could not be justified. He argued that the only viable path forward was for the United Nations to take concrete action that would lead to a permanent political settlement acceptable to both parties.
The Nigerian delegation at UNGA highlighted that the country’s foreign policy has consistently advocated dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts. Tinubu’s remarks were seen as reinforcing Nigeria’s long-standing support for multilateral diplomacy and its role in peacekeeping across Africa and beyond.
Diplomatic observers say Tinubu’s position resonates with a significant number of nations pushing for renewed peace talks and a stronger UN mandate to mediate in the Middle East crisis. His stance also reflects the growing international pressure on major powers to facilitate a practical framework for the two-state solution, which has remained stalled despite decades of negotiations.
With the Middle East crisis dominating discussions at UNGA80, Tinubu’s speech is expected to add momentum to the push for international consensus on Palestine, as leaders continue to debate measures aimed at restoring peace and stability to one of the world’s most volatile regions.
